November’s Superstar Wine of the Month

Domaine d’Eole Coteaux d’Aix en Provence 2007

Still warm, still wintry, there is something earthy about this time of year that makes me think organic. So off I went to organic specialists Earth, Vine and Wine to find an autumnal treat. And here it is!  The 2007 vintage from Domaine d’Eole is beautifully balanced – aromas of blackcurrant, cardamom and a hint of farmyard along with oaky, cedar notes.  Delicious on the palate, this wine has great structure with velvety, lingering tannins and good acidity ensures you can keep this a few years if you wish. But you won’t – you’ll want to enjoy the long fruity, spicy finish with some delicious Comté cheese or roasted lamb with rosemary, herbs de Provence and chestnuts.

Domaine d’Eole comes from vineyards located on the slopes of the most breath-taking Provence scenery: The Alpilles, meaning “the little Alps”.  Situated in the north-west corner of the Bouches du Rhône, they spread out like a triangle from Avignon to the borders of the Camargue near Arles. The landscape here is magnificent: little mountains covered by pines and oak forests.

Domaine d’Eole lies in this wonderful area and the winery has been lead by Matthias Wimmer since 1993, a passionate German winemaker, who has been seduced by the distinctive mineral, limestone soils – similar to those you would find in the Dolomites in Italy – which give wines a unique crisp, vibrant acidity due to the calcium magnesium carbonate component.

All his Wimmer’s wines are beautifully blended, as he uses Mediterranean grapes to show the elegance which can be found in a good Bordeaux blend.

Made with Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, Domaine d’Eole 2007 is brilliant ruby red in colour with a slight purple hue – perfect to bid a setting sun farewell and embrace warmer notes for the chillier evenings.
