Canayli 2010-Vermentino di Gallura DOCG Superior
“Your words are my food, your breath my wine…”
I wonder for whom these romantic words of Sarah Bernhardt’s were intended? Did she have a wine in mind? A special dish? Perhaps she was enjoying a lovely shellfish feast by the sea, looking out towards the sunset as I am now.
Please, come and join me in my romantic reverie, admission is just one bottle of Vermentino di Gallura from the wild, starry skied Sardinia. This Italian island is in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, and has the most beautiful, wind-swept beaches and a seemingly never-ending supply of delicious, fresh fish. Surprisingly Sardinia is producing some interesting wines, and this is my favourite of the whites I’ve tried this week.
Straw yellow in colour with a hint of green, this is a fabulous alternative step up from your usual white wine. The aromas are heady and intense, a definite minerality along with grapefruit zest and a hint of thyme. The palate is lovely and refreshing, just what is needed on a warm summer evening, and there is a depth to the wine which gives it a fullness and firmness of flavour and texture. This harmonious balance of alcohol and freshness leaves a long, elegant, citrus finish. Match with a shellfish soup, barbecued scampi or a fresh seafood salad and feel the romance…Ah, Vermentino, “you are everything to me!”
