October’s Superstar Wine of the Month

Eric Isselée Cuvée Réserve 2005

Before summer even happened, autumn is here, so let’s just get on and celebrate the new season with a sparkly start, and a champagne with a difference.

Eric Isselée is a small family-run Champagne House in the Grand Cru Village of Cramant south of Epernay on the renowned chalky slopes of the Côte des Blancs.

Part of the fascination of champagne is its terroir. The chalky sediments ensure excellent drainage and play an important part in temperature regulation, their pale colour refracting the light and heat, which warms and matures the famous chardonnay grapes. The champagne making process is another special element to its mystery, and this little champagne house showed us their cellar and talked us though their bottling process.

Cuvée Réserve 2005 is light gold in colour with small, persistent bubbles. It is beautifully dry with a  fresh and intense nose of lively citrus zest and notes of Golden Delicious apples, all mixed up with delicate toasty bread and melted butter The palate shows an elegant, mineral acidity perfectly balanced with a rounded mouth-feel, good body and a long fruity, toasty finish.  A delicious wine and good value too.
